There is Help for You
There are resources both from City of Detroit and State of Michigan for homeowners, renters and landlords.
There are criteria for both and if you do not qualify for either, you can apply to Michigan Saves Lead Poisoning Prevention Fund for a loan.
Detroit LeadSafe Housing help through Housing & Redevelopment Department is for Detroiters who meet the following criteria:
- Live in these zip codes:
- 48202, 48203, 20204, 48206, 48208, 48209, 48210, 48211, 48212, 48213, 48214, 48215, 48217, 48227, 48234, 48238
- Meet the income qualifier
- Have children under age of 6 living (or visiting) your home
- Are pregnant or have someone pregnant living with you

Michigan Lead Safe Home Program
This program is available to homeowners, landlords and renters and includes:
- Free Lead Inspection
- Free Lead Safety Work
To qualify you must meet all criteria in either 1 or 2
Option 1
- There is a child under 19 or a pregnant female enrolled in medicare
- Your home is in Flint, Detroit, or elsewhere if child under 19 has a lead level of 5 or higher
Option 2
- Home is built before 1978
- A child under 6 or a pregnant female living in the home
- Home is in Genesee, Jackson, Kalamazoo Kent, Macomb, Oakland Saginaw counties or City of Detroit or elsewhere if a child under 6 has level of 5 or higher
- Occupants’ gross income is low to moderate
- Property taxes are paid up to date
Michigan Saves Lead Poising Prevention Fund
If you do not meet qualifications for the two above programs, this fund fills a critical gap for homeowners and income property owners who don’t qualify for the free Detroit or MDHHS lead abatement services.
