There is Help for you
There are resources both from City of Detroit and State of Michigan for homeowners, renters and landlords.
There are criteria for both and if you do not qualify for either, you can apply to Michigan Saves Lead Poisoning Prevention Fund for a loan.
Detroit LeadSafe Housing help through Housing & Redevelopment Department is for Detroiters who meet the following criteria
- Live in these zip codes:
- 48202, 48203, 20204, 48206, 48208, 48209, 48210, 48211, 48212, 48213, 48214, 48215, 48217, 48227, 48234, 48238
- Meet the income qualifier
- Have children under age of 6 living (or visiting) your home
- Are pregnant or have someone pregnant living with you

If you do not meet city of Detroit, there is help from the state. The Michigan Lead Safe Home Program is available to homeowners, landlords and renters.
Detroit LeadSafe Housing Program – Home Investigations and Abatements
LeadSafe Housing is a free program to remove lead-based paint hazards in homes where children under the age of 6 are living, including pregnant moms. This includes ANY home where children would be living or visiting 6+ hours a week.
The Housing and Revitalization Department (HRD) received funds from the federal and state governments to reduce lead-based paint hazards in homes built before 1978 in order to create safe and healthy homes for children.
The department also provides investigations for homes of children under 6 with elevated blood lead levels.

Detroit Health Department Lead Prevention and Intervention Program
The goal of the Lead Prevention and Intervention Program is to prevent childhood lead poisoning, identify and treat exposed children, and reduce lead in the home.
The Lead Program provides case management, including home visits from advocates and nurses and educates community members and professionals.
Lead Testing is available at DHD every Thursday during normal business hours. Call (313) 876-0133 to make an appointment.

Rental Inspections and Landlord Outreach
The Buildings Safety Environment and Engineering Department (BSEED) provides lead education to rental owners, inspects rental units for lead, and issues violations to non-compliant landlords. If you are a renter and think your home should be inspected for lead or think your landlord is non-compliant contact Buildings, Safety, Engineering, and Environmental Department (BSEED).

Detroit Landlord Training Program
The City of Detroit and Environmental Testing and Consulting (ETC) have announced a new training program aimed at helping landlords and local contractors understand lead paint compliance issues.

Detroit Lead Parent Advocacy Group
About 50% of children in the City of Detroit have elevated blood lead levels leading to lead poisoning. De-Lead Education and Advocacy in Detroit (D-LEAD) is a parent group advocating for lead-safe homes and universal lead testing in kids. D-LEAD is convened and sponsored by the Center for Urban Studies at Wayne State University.
